At NIB, we believe great work begins with a strong foundation. And not just in the structures we build across the Spokane, WA, area, but in the relationships that shape our journey.

From humble beginnings as a young helper on his uncle's job sites to running a thriving, well-respected company, the story of our founder (and team) is definitely one of growth, perseverance, and a deep love for the work we do. The following comes directly from him.

The Beginning

Growing Up With A Builder

Photo from the mid-to-late 1980s captures a young Nathan Taylor, the founder of NIB, alongside his Uncle Mike on a construction job site. At the time, Nathan was just a kid, but his fascination with the work his uncle did sparked a passion for the trades that would shape the rest of his life. It’s one of the earliest moments that set the foundation for his future in the building world.

As a kid, my uncle Mike was one of my heroes. He was a home builder, and my parents would have him babysit me during the summer. I'd follow him around on the job, watching him work with his tools, his knowledge, and his passion. There was something about how he took raw materials and turned them into something real, something lasting, that I couldn't help but fall in love with. Mike became my mentor, an early idol, and the reason I eventually chose this path for myself. Watching him work, I knew I wanted to build, too. It came naturally.

High School

Sticking Around The Job Sites

The front entrance of Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona, where Nathan Taylor attended school. The vibrant, bold architecture and recognizable V-shaped mascot reflect the spirit of the community that shaped Nathan’s early years. His path in construction and the trades began with the values and work ethic nurtured during his time at this school, where the foundation of his career was laid.

By high school (Mountain View… Go Toros!), I wasn't the kid who needed babysitting anymore, but I still couldn't stay away from the construction sites. I'd go back to work for Mike, helping him build his rental properties. He kept things small, managing most of it on his own with just a few subs. I loved it. I loved the satisfaction of getting my hands dirty and being part of something that would make a difference. That's when I knew I wanted to be in the trades.

My Twenties

Learning The Hard Way

In my 20s, I worked all sorts of jobs in the trades – framing, siding, roofing, etc., and everything in between. I wasn't sure exactly where I fit in, so I took some vocational courses in HVAC, heavy equipment, and even online courses to learn more. I was still figuring it out. But when I landed a gig as a finish carpenter, things started clicking. I worked long hours on the road, installing trim and cabinets, learning the finer details of the craft. That's when I realized: This was it. This was my path.

A Turning Point

Making A Decision For Family

From the early days of learning the ropes in the trades to managing large exterior remodeling projects, Nathan’s hands-on approach and deep understanding of the work are reflected in every project.

As much as I loved the work, I knew I needed to make a change to be there for my family. So, I left the road behind and came back home. But local work wasn't great, and the pay was low. I started doing siding and landscaping, and it wasn't glamorous, but it was honest work. I stuck to my decision to stay in the city I loved (Spokane, WA) and make it work. It wasn't easy, but it was important. And it kept me going, knowing I was building something for my family, even if it didn't always feel glamorous.

2012

Taking The Leap

At 32, I took a big gamble. I got my business license and started looking for work. The first year was tough. I worked for another contractor as an hourly employee, doing remodels.

But I knew I wanted to do my own thing, so in 2012, I hired my first employee! Just the two of us, we started to tackle bigger projects, and we built a reputation for quality. I remember the satisfaction of seeing our process click – everything running smoothly, like a well-oiled machine.

2018

Building A Team

The photo captures the precision and teamwork involved in the process, with workers positioning the trusses while a NIB truck is parked nearby, signifying the company's involvement in the project. It’s a snapshot of the skilled labor that goes into every new construction project that Nathan and his team take on.

By 2018, I knew it was time to grow. We'd been busy, always booked months in advance, but I wanted more. So, we started building a team, and it wasn't always a cake walk. There were mistakes, lessons learned, and plenty of trial and error. But over time, we started finding the right people. People who shared the same work ethic, the same dedication to quality. And that's when we really began to grow. We were able to tackle bigger projects while still maintaining the personal touch on which we built our reputation.

Today

Staying Flexible, Getting Stronger

A construction project nearing completion, with freshly fallen snow covering the ground and surrounding landscape. In the foreground, the partially framed home is in progress, showing off the careful work done by the NIB team. The team is hard at work even in colder conditions, demonstrating their dedication to delivering high-quality projects no matter the weather.

Now, we've got a strong, well-rounded team. Each person brings something unique to the table, and we've learned how to lean on each other's strengths. We still keep things small enough to take on those more intimate projects, but we're also ready for larger, more complex jobs. It's the best of both worlds. We can scale up, but we never lose sight of what made us successful in the first place: quality, flexibility, and a personal touch.

15+ Years

More Than Just A Team – A Family

The NIB team is working on the trusses of a home, with the framework rising up under the clear blue sky. A few crew members are strategically positioned, carefully securing the structure while demonstrating the safety and teamwork that NIB is known for. The open space within the home’s frame highlights the scope of the project and the meticulous craftsmanship going into the construction.

15+ years into this, it's clear that we're more than just a team. We're a family. It's the kind of bond that comes from working side by side, day in and day out. We've got each other's backs, both on the job and off. People stick around. This tight-knit group of skilled tradesmen has been the backbone of our success, and it's something I'm incredibly proud of. The quality of our work is a direct reflection of the respect and trust we've built over the years. And that's what keeps me/us going every day.
